Panelists: Rabbi Julie Roth and Dr. Harold Shapiro

This is the first in a series of panel discussions between our local clergy and noted scientists in the community about topics of contemporary importance. Here, Rabbi Roth, the Rabbi and Executive Director of the Center of Jewish Life at Princeton University, and Prof. Harold Shapiro, former President of Princeton University and a noted bioethicist, will discuss issues surrounding physician assisted suicide and end of life.

Rabbi Julie Roth is the Executive Director of Center for Jewish Life – Princeton Hillel where she teaches seminars in Jewish Biomedical Ethics and Living Life as a Sacred Gift. Rabbi Roth holds a B.A. in Comparative Religion from Brown University and was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary. During rabbinical school, she served as a Chaplain at the Harlem Hospital Center She is married to Rabbi Justus Baird and can be sighted riding her bicycle to the Jewish Center on Shabbat mornings together with their three kids.

Harold T. Shapiro, economist and President Emeritus of Princeton University and the University of Michigan, is a professor in the Department of Economics and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. He received his undergraduate degree from McGill University and his Ph.D. from Princeton University both in economics.

Current scholarly/teaching interests are in bioethics, science policy, energy and climate issues, and the evolution of postsecondary education. He has served as Vice Chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology and the Chair of the National Bioethics Advisory Commission.
